About 4000 hectares of standing Boro crops have been submerged so far due to flash flood, causing losses to the tune of Tk 500 million to the farmers in Sunamganj and Netrakona haor areas, according to the field service wing of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque told the FE that preparation was taken to complete harvest in time to prevent further losses.
He said the government would take steps to help recoup the losses incurred by the affected farmers.
The government agencies were working twenty four hours to protect the existing dams and renovate the damaged ones, it was learnt.
The flood forecasting and warning centre said a mild to moderate flood might hit the Haor area in next few days while a severe one might occur at the end of this month.
According to the DAE, a total of 0.45 million hectares of land were brought under rice farming in this Boro season in the haor region.
The area contributes nearly 10 per cent to the total production of rice in the Boro season.
A flash flood caused by upstream water in the area in 2017 caused a severe crop damage resulting in an all-time high price of rice.
