28 Bangladeshi mariners on way to Romania, foreign secretary says

The government of Bangladesh has started a process to shift 28 Bangladeshi mariners of the Banglar Samriddhi to Romania from Ukraine.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen gave the information while talking to the newsmen on Friday.

The foreign secretary informed that the body of Hadisur Rahman, the third engineer of the ship, is also being shifted. Hadisur was killed on board when a missile hit the ship on March 2.

“The mariners will be shifted to Romania via Moldova,” the foreign secretary said.

The body of Hadisur Rahman will be brought back home along with the mariners.

Talking about the attack on the ship, he said, “It is not clear who made the attack on the ship which was anchored in Port Olivia of Ukraine.”

“Russia said that they were not involved in the attack, and they assured us to investigate into the matter to have the real picture,” Masud Bin Momen added.

The government has already decided to declare the Banglar Samriddhi abandoned.

Responding to a question, he said that around 600 Bangladeshis reached Poland and other neighbouring countries from Ukraine after the beginning of the war.

“We think there are at least 100 Bangladeshis in Ukraine now, and they may be reluctant to leave Ukraine.”
