The 24th death anniversary of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam, who spearheaded the movement for trial of the war criminals, will be observed in the country on Tuesday.
Jahanara Imam, the brave mother of martyred Shafi Imam Rumi, along with pro-liberation politicians, prominent cultural personalities and intellectuals floated the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee (the committee for annihilation of the killers and collaborators of 1971) on January 19 in 1992.
The Nirmul Committee held symbolic trial of Golam Azam in a Gano Adalat (mass court) at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan on March 26 in 1992 awarding the Jamaat supremo with capital punishment, reports BSS.
After leading the movement for two and a half years, eminent writer and social worker Jahanara Imam breathed her last due to cancer on June 26 in 1994.
Different socio-cultural organisations will observe the day through various programmes.
Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee will pay rich tributes to Imam by placing wreaths at her grave in Mirpur here at 8am. Memorial lecture and discussion will also be held.
Health and Family Welfare Minister and Awami League Presidium Member Mohammed Nasim will attend the memorial lecture at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) seminar room at 3:00pm.
Jahanara Imam was born in Murshidabad of West Bengal in India on May 3 in 1929.
Her book ‘Ekattorer Dinlipi’ is recognised as a documentation of the Liberation War.
