24 prisoners die in three months

A total of 24 prisoners died at different jails across the country in the first three months from January to March this year, according to an independent rights body.

Among them, 15 were undertrials and nine others convicted prisoners, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) said in a report published recently.

In 2021, the number of deaths in jail custody was 81. Of the prisoners, 52 were undertrials and 29 convicts, the independent rights body said.

Some 75 prisoners died at different Bangladesh jails in 2021. Of them, some 45 were undertrials and 30 convicts, the ASK revealed.

In 2020, the number of deaths in jail custody was 58. Of the prisoners, 36 were facing trials and 22 convicts, the ASK stated.

In 2019, the number of deaths in jail custody was 58. Among them, 36 were undertrials while 22 were convicted, the independent rights body said.

The ASK report also added that a total of 74 people died in jail custody in the country in 2018. Of them, 45 were undertrials and 29 convicts.
