Boro crops on around 12,000 hectares of land in four unions of Tarash upazila in Sirajganj went under water due to waterlogging caused by heavy rains.

The affected unions are Magura Binod, Baogaon, Madhainagar and Saguna, said Saiful Islam, an agriculture officer of Tarash upazila.

The cropland was submerged as water could not be removed from there following unplanned construction work of bridges, culverts as well as housing, he added.

The farmers are afraid of harvesting paddy from the field as leech breeds in the water due to the prolonged waterlogging.

Besides, day labourers were demanding high wage for harvesting paddy from the water body.

Around 22,000 hectares of land have been brought under Boro cultivation in eight unions of the upazila though the target was set around 21,000 hectares, reports UNB.
