1,200 medical teams to keep sick cattle at bay ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Thursday said about 1,200 medical teams will work in the cattle markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha aiming to prevent sick cattle from entering the market amid the Covid-19 crisis.

At the same time, a monitoring team consisting of officials of the ministry will be formed. Measures will be taken to promote hygiene in the haats (markets), he insisted.

The minister made the remarks at an online ministry meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital to ensure smooth supply and sale of healthy cattle at the markets.

A hotline number will be set up at the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) to address the problems of livestock marketing and transportation. Senior officials of the ministry will be involved in the full-time hotline service, the minister said.

Under no circumstances, cattle will not be allowed to be brought from abroad for sacrifice. This year, we are trying to focus on the online marketing of cattle because of the Covid-19 crisis, the senior minister says.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Raunak Mahmud, among others, were present in the programme.

This year, some 11.90 million cattle are available for sacrifice against the total demand of 11.20 million, according to DLS.

Some 11.78 million cattle were available for sacrifice last year against the total demand for 11.20 million, the DLS statistics showed.

A total of 4538,000 cows and buffaloes, 7,355,000 sheep and goats and 4,500 other animals like camel and dumba are set to be sacrificed during this Eid, the DLS data showed.

Under the government's cow-fattening programme, these animals have been reared at 577,416 farms, according to official statistics.
