1,039 aspirants submit nomination papers for Dhaka city polls

A total of 1,039 aspirants submitted nomination papers for contesting the posts of mayor, councillor and reserved councillor in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections slated for January 30.

A total of 14 aspirants have submitted nomination papers for contesting the mayoral posts in the elections to the two city corporations. A total of 2,260 nomination papers were sold out till the last date of submitting nomination papers on Tuesday.

A total of 470 aspirants submitted nomination papers for contesting the DNCC polls, DNCC Returning Officer Md Abul Kashem said of Wednesday.

Among them, seven for the mayoral, 374 for councillor and 89 for reserved councillor posts submitted their nomination papers, he said.

The aspirants for the mayoral post are Atiqul Islam of Awami League (AL), Tabith Awal of BNP, GM Qamrul Islam of Jatiya Party, Shahin Khan of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), Fazle Bari Masud of Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Sajedul Haque of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Anisur Rahman Dewan of National People’s Party (NPP).

Besides, a total 569 aspirants submitted nomination papers for contesting the DSCC polls, DSCC Returning Officer Abdul Baten said.

Among them, seven for the mayoral, 460 for councillor and 102 for reserved councillor posts submitted the nomination papers, he said.

The aspirants for the DSCC mayoral post are Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh of AL, Ishraq Hossain of BNP, Saifuddin Ahmed Milon of Jatiya Party, Md Abdur Rahman of Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Bahrane Sultan Bahar of NPP, Md Aktar Uzzaman alias Ayatullah of Bangladesh Congress and Abdus Samad Sujan of Gono Front.

According to the polls schedule, the nomination papers will be scrutinized tomorrow (January 2) while the last date for withdrawing candidacy is January 9.

The aspirants can lodge appeals to the appellate authority against the Returning Officers’ decision by January 5 while election symbol will be distributed among the candidates on January 10.

Besides, the Election Commission (EC) has sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs urging for creating level playing field for all the candidates and ensuring security for all during the upcoming DSCC and DNCC elections.

EC Senior Secretary Md Alamgir sent the letter to senior secretary of the Home Ministry’s Public Security Division for taking necessary actions to this end, EC sources said on Wednesday, reports BSS.
