World observes Anti-Obesity Day

November 26 is observed as the Anti-Obesity Day (AOD) in various parts of the world to highlight how Obesity is a public health hazard.

Several healthcare organisations and media chalked out various activities to mark the day.

The last reported survey by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and UNICEF revealed that among children less than five years of age, there is a 1.4 per cent prevalence of obesity in Bangladesh.

With the rise of fast food restaurants and an increasing practice of eating out, obesity is a serious problem in Bangladesh as it is in the western countries.

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing rates in adults and children. In 2015, about 100 million children worldwide were obese.

By 2020, it is estimated that the global prevalence of childhood obesity will reach approximately 60 million.
