About 20 million people in the country are facing different physical problems blamed on thyroid hormone and 50 per cent of them are women, speakers said at a conference in the city.
They said proper treatment and screening are important for curing those physical problems.
They were speaking at the third national conference of the Bangladesh Thyroid Society (BTS) held at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University's NINMAS auditorium recently. About 250 doctors attended the programme.
Speakers at the programme said the main reason for infertility is both scarcity and excess secretion of thyroid hormone.
A plenary session was held on thyroid cancer too.
Bangladesh Thyroid Society (BTS) has formed a new 25-member committee in its annual general meeting held after the conference.
Professor Dr Fauzia Moslem has been elected president and Professor Dr Faridul Alam secretary general of the BTS.
