Experts have said 50 million Bangladeshis are suffering from Thyroid hormone of which thirty million don't even know about their problem.
The information was revealed on Friday at a press briefing organised by Bangladesh Endocrine Society (BES) at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital marking World Thyroid Day, which is being observed in the country like elsewhere in the world.
"Female are 10 times more at risk from Thyroid hormone than male," BES president Prof Dr Md Faruk Pathan said, adding "According to a research, 20 to 30 per cent of them are suffering from Thyroid hormones in one or another way."
BES vice-president Prof Dr Md Farid Uddin, general secretary Dr Md Hafizur Rahman and Organising Secretary Dr Shahjada Selim were present, among others, on the occasion.
BES president said there is no particular statistics about the disease in rural areas...But we can assume that the situation is severe there.
The experts said women must have Thyroid diagnosis before marriage or pregnancy and if there is any possibility of such problem, they should take immediate treatment otherwise newborn may also fall victim to this hormone.
They called for creating awareness campaign against Thyroid and sought the involvement of physicians in this regard, reports BSS.
