Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon has launched the country’s first electronic registration (e- registration) of diabetes patient.
The listed information in that electronic system will help deliver quality care for patient living with diabetes through analysing epidemiology, says a media release.
The electronic registry will be implemented through the institutions of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) and its affiliated associations across the country with the support of Novo Nordisk.
Md Sayef Uddin, Secretary General of BADAS, and Frederik Kier, Senior Vice President of Novo Nordisk, inked a memorandum of understanding to develop the registry on December of 2017.
As a chief guest Rashed Khan Menon said, “The launching of the nationwide electronic diabetes patient registry is a big milestone for Bangladesh. This initiative will bring benefits for patients living with diabetes. I want to give a special thank you to BADAS and Novo Nordisk.”
The minister also said the new nationwide registry will provide health outcome data to monitor patient needs and identify health problems that need prompt attention.
It will also help to address the rising burden of diabetes to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), he added.
The United Nations has recognised diabetes among other non-communicable diseases as a major challenge for achieving SDGs.
“In Bangladesh there is no conclusive study or survey which provides an exact number or figure of the diabetic population,” said BADAS president professor AK Azad Khan.
“I think this electronic system will give a clear picture not only on the number of patients living with diabetes but also burden of disease on the country,” he added.
BADAS president also said that proper care will be offered to the patients across the country by analysing the data.
Improving the understanding of diabetes and the need for its prevention is critical, which is why Novo Nordisk works to raise awareness for the diabetes epidemic and its impact in Bangladesh, said Anand Shetty, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk Bangladesh.
As a global leader in diabetes care, Novo Nordisk is working over 60 years in Bangladesh for improving understanding of diabetes and the need for its prevention beside BADAS, he said.
Keeping this in mind, Novo Nordisk in partnership with BADAS has taken many initiatives to ensure access to quality care for patients, said Shetty, adding that changing diabetes® barometer, changing diabetes® in children (CDiC) programme are to name a few.
Anil Kapur, Chairman of the Board, World diabetes foundation; Md Sayef Uddin, Secretary General of BADAS; Zafar Ahmed Latif, Director General of BIRDEM General Hospital; Mohammad Saiful, Heaf of Marketing of Novo Nordisk were present at the programme.
According to International Diabetes Federation, 6.9 million people are living with diabetes in Bangladesh and it will hit 13.7 million by 2045.
