‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ tells the backstory of the beloved Despicable Me villain

The Despicable Me franchise has been going on for almost a decade – a middle-aged supervillain with an odd accent on a quest to rule the world with a flock of adorable yellow creatures, aka minions, as his assistants.

Initially as the Despicable Me trilogy, the adventure of the supervillain Gru was funny and entertaining enough to be a popular family-friendly movie.

After Despicable Me 2, the franchise introduced a spin-off prequel film Minions in 2015. It focuses solely on the origin story of Minions and their penchant for serving the villainous people since the dawn of humanity.

The film became widely successful as it earned 1.159 billion dollars in revenue. The success prompted Universal Pictures to announce the sequel to this spin-off in 2017, Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Minions are a race of small yellow creatures speaking in gibberish and funny behaviour. Their sole goal is to serve every evil person to have ever existed, but they accidentally send the villains to their doom by bad luck.

As shown in Minions, they become reclusive due to their banishment by Napoleon after an accident. Many years later, the rise of villains in America gives them another chance at fulfilling their purpose.

Eventually, they serve a young Gru who is on a mission to become the worst villain ever despite being an 11-year-old boy. Released on 1st July, Minions: The Rise of Gru focuses on this story and the relationship between Gru and his minions.

Like the other films in the franchise, this film is equally enjoyable for kids. The young audience will see the minions in action once again and witness their adorable mistakes and villainous adventures with Gru.

Though Gru aspires to become a supervillain, he always ends up saving the world and stopping more evil supervillains from devising more nefarious plans.

In this film, Gru gets entangled with a villain organisation’s plans to gain mythical powers while only having the intent to join them as a youngblood.

On his quest to defeat the organisation, he is accompanied by Wild Knuckles, who got betrayed by the same organisation he leads. He has his own arc to beat the team of supervillains. And the minions, they accompany Gru from the beginning even learning martial arts to rescue Gru from kidnappers.

Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott in The Office, reprises his role as Gru from the franchise. The film’s cast includes big names from the past decades like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Danny Trejo, Alan Arkin, and so on.

The entire Despicable Me is still at its peak fame because of its immortality as a subject of continuous internet memes since the 2010s.

The recent TikTok trend showed another rise in meme culture of watching this film in theatres wearing a suit. So, it might be a great time to watch this family-friendly light-hearted comedy as ‘Gentleminions.’
