Lyricist-journalist KG Mostafa dies aged 84

Noted lyricist, poet and journalist KG Mostafa has passed away at the age of 84.

Writer of popular songs like “Tomare Legechhe Eto Je Bhalo” and “Aynate Oi Mukh Dekhbe Jokhon”, Mostafa breathed his last at 8pm on Sunday, said Ilias Khan, general secretary of the National Press Club, bdnews24.com reports.

Ilias said funeral prayers for Mostafa will be held at the Press Club premises in Dhaka after Zuhr prayers on Monday.

The Press Club general secretary said Mostafa’s family took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital from their Azimpur home after he felt ill. Doctors declared him dead.

Mostafa was suffering from complications related to his kidney and heart.

Born in Noakhali’s Begumganj on Jul 1, 1937, Mostafa studied Bangla literature at Dhaka University.

He began his career in journalism by joining the Dainik Ittehad in 1958. He worked in several dailies later.

He joined the Department of Films and Publications as an assistant editor in 1976. He worked as the editor of adolescent magazine Nobarun, literature magazine Purbachal and the weekly Bangladesh Sangbad, published by the department.

He retired as a senior editor of Sachitra Bangladesh in 1996. He had also worked as the managing editor of Agradut, the mouthpiece of Bangladesh Scouts.

Mostafa edited Kobitapatra, a regular Press Club publication of poetry.

More than a thousand of songs written by him were sung in Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television.

He also worked as the assistant director of the films “Mayar Sangsar”, “Odhikar” and “Goli Theke Rajpoth”.

His poetry books include “Kachhe Thako Chhuyen Thakho”, “Uronto Rumal”, “Chokkhuhin Projapoti”,  “Satnori Pran”, and “Ek Mutho Bhalobasa”. His satirical autobiography is “Kothai Cholechhi Ami”.

He also wrote three books of children’s poetry: “Shishu Tumi Jishu”, “Konya Tumi Ananya” and “Mojar Chhora Shishur Pora”.

He has won numerous awards, including from the Press Club and Dhaka University.
