The Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering to determine the budget for public universities after scrutinising their competency and efficiency from the next fiscal year.
The UGC is also working to increase the allowance in budget for research to build higher education institutions as centers of excellence.
The university regulatory body came up with the development at the concluding day of a two-day budget meeting for public universities at the UGC Auditorium on Monday.
UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah joined the meeting virtually as the chief guest while commission member Prof Abu Taher presided over the budget meeting.
The UGC chairman said, “financial discipline is utmost important in public universities. There is no room for error in financial matters. Not a single penny can be discounted here.”
He advised the officials to ensure the money allocated in the budget does not keep unused or put lazily.
He also requested all to perform their official duties in accordance with the laws of the university and the government and with the approval of the UGC.
Prof. Abu Taher said that the commission is thinking of allocating budget in public universities after evaluating their efficiency, because, when the efficiency of the university decreases, the standard of the university as a whole goes down.
