South Asia Regional Conference begins at Dhaka University

DU holds South Asia Regional Conference

The Dhaka University and Bangladesh Legal Aid & Services Trust (BLAST) have jointly organised the South Asia Regional Conference at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of the university.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the two-day long conference titled “Gender, Rights and Choices: Access to Justice in a Megacity” as the chief guest on Monday.

He urged the professionals, lawyers, academicians and social activists to work together to make Bangladesh a country of gender equality, social justice and women empowerment.

Terming Bangladesh’s achievement as developing country the VC said, “We have to work hard now to ensure overall socio-economic development,” according to a press release.

The vice-chancellor stressed the need for eradicating gender discrimination and establishing access to justice for women in every sphere of our society for making Bangladesh a developed country.

Dean of the Faculty of Law of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah presided over the inaugural function, while Ambassador of Netherlands in Bangladesh Leoni Margaretha Cueleneare addressed it as the guest of honour.

Senior Advocate of Bangladesh Supreme Court Dr. Kamal Hossain, Senior Advisor of Global Legal Empowerment Network Marlon J. Manuel, Consultant of BLAST Barrister Faria Ahmad and Professor of the Department of Public Administration of the DU Dr. Ferdous Jahan presented papers in the opening session.

Honorary Executive Director of BLAST Sara Hossain delivered welcome address at the programme where lawyers, researchers and human rights activists from home and abroad were also present.
