Rajshahi University (RU), the second largest public university in the country, on Friday celebrated its 65th founding anniversary in a befitting manner.
The day’s programmes began with rendering national anthem and hoisting of national flag, university flag and hall flags in front of administrative building at 10 am.
Afterwards, RU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the programme releasing pigeons and colourful balloons. The VC also planted saplings on the occasion.
Marking the day, teachers, officers and students brought out a rally that paraded different roads of the campus. The university authority also organised a discussion on senate building premises with its VC in the chair.
Pro-VC Professor Ananda Kumar Shaha, Treasurer Professor Mustafizur Rahman Al Arif, Registrar Professor Abdul Bari and Proctor Professor Lutfor Rahman were on the occasion, among others.
Meanwhile, all the key buildings of the university were illuminated with colourful lightings.
RU began its journey on July 6, 1953 with only 161 students and 68 teachers in 6 departments under 3 faculties, BSS reported.
Currently, the university has over 1,231 teachers in 58 departments under 9 faculties, along with 9 research institutes and 37,248 regular students.
The university has 18 residential halls including six for female and Shaheed Mir Abdul Kayyum International Dormitory for international students and researchers.
It has also 43 PhD holders, 106 MPhil fellows and 149 researchers.
Professor Itrat Hossain Zuberi was the first VC of the university.
