Professor Dr Jahangir Alam Khan has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Global Village (UGV), Barisal.
President and also the Chancellor of the varsity, Md Abdul Hamid recently appointed him as the VC for next four years.
Professor Alam is a valiant Freedom Fighter and a renowned Agricultural Economist.
Prior to this appointment, Dr Alam was holding the position of Professor of Agriculture Economics and Acting Vice-Chancellor of UGV.
He obtained his Bachelor of Social Science (B.Sc) and Master of Social Science (M. Sc) degrees in Agriculture Economics in 1972 and 1973 respectively from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.
He obtained Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in 1983 and completed Post-Doctoral studies from Lincoln University, New Zealand in the year of 1998.
He worked as the Director General of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka from 2006 to 2009 and Member Director (Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council from 2001 to 2006.
Dr Alam was the Former President of Bangladesh Agricultural Economists' Association.
A BSS report said he received several awards including the Presidential Award for Agricultural Development in 1980. He was also awarded Dr SD Choudhuri Gold Medal by the Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture for his outstanding contribution to Agricultural and Rural Economics in 2004.
He is a life member of Bangladesh Economic Association, Bangla Academy, Asiatic Society and Krishibid Institution Bangladesh.
Professor Alam was a renowned debater during his student life and achieved championship in the university and inter-university debate competitions several times. He was adorned with the Vice-Chancellor's Gold Medal in 1974 for his outstanding literary activities at Bangladesh Agricultural University.
