Progressive students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University held a documentary screening, discussion meeting and cultural program titled 'Zubair Hotyakander Egaro Son, Ar Kono Fosol Keete Khete Debo naa, which means 'Eleventh year of Zubair's murder, no more crops will be eaten by insects,' on the day of the tenth anniversary of Zubair Ahmed murder, a student of the Department of English.
A discussion meeting under the banner of 'Sontraser Biruddhe Jahangirnagar' was held at the Transport Yard of the university.
Teachers and students protested against the brutal death of Zubair Ahmed due to terrorisation on the university campus. They said that around 39 murders have occurred in various educational institutions in Bangladesh since Zubair's murder. Most of the murders on campus are not prosecuted. Although few cases were tried, it is seen that the accused fled abroad.
In the discussion meeting, Professor of Philosophy Rayhan Rhyne said, "Before and after this murder, no justice was ensured for the murders of Ananda, Kabir, Dipu and others. We made a resolution that justice should be ensured for Zubair.
"This murder is not just an accident. It has a context when blood was shed on the campus almost every week. Even during the agitation for justice for the murders, there were 9 cases of physical violence. The then university administration was such (incompetent) that from among the activists of the Chhatra League, another terrorful group was created in direct favour of the then vice-chancellor, which we called VC League. This administration caused extensive damage to the academic and natural environment of the university through terroristic activities," he further alleged.
Soumik Bagchi, President of Jahangirnagar Cultural Association, said, "Year after year, we have to find insects (Killers). They can fly like free birds. Who assists them? Students enter every university with a dream, to study. We are not getting a tranquil life here where one did not hesitate to kill his classmate."
General Secretary of Socialist Students' Front Kanoj Kanti Roy said, "A frenzy of killing has been done in the campuses. Abrar, Biswajit, and Zubair were killed. Few are sentenced, but they roam freely."
On January 8, 2012, the activists of the opposition fraction Chhatra League attacked Zubair on campus and severely injured him. He died the next morning while undergoing treatment at the United Hospital in the capital.
On February 8, 2015, the lower court gave a verdict in the murder case. The verdict sentenced five accused to death and six to life imprisonment.
On January 25, 2018, the High Court upheld the death sentence of five persons and gave the final verdict. The High Court acquitted four of the six accused sentenced to life imprisonment in the trial court. However, the murderers escaped from the country.
