IUB holds symposium on air pollution

Habibun Nahar, deputy minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change inaugurating a symposium titled ‘Beat Air Pollution’ on IUB campus Tuesday

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) held a symposium on air pollution on its campus Tuesday.    

The seminar titled ‘Beat Air Pollution’ was organised by the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESM). 

Habibun Nahar, deputy minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change inaugurated the ceremony as the chief guest, while Dr Nurul Quadir, additional secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was present as the special guest. 

Dr Arifur Rahman Khan, research assistant professor of University of Texas El Paso, attended the programme as keynote speaker and gave presentation on ‘Earth Environment Monitoring by a Conceptual 3U Small Satellite Mission: IRISSPO’. 

A Matin Chowdhury, chairman, Board of Trustees, IUB and Treasurer and Vice Chancellor (In-charge) Khandker Md Iftekhar Haider also spoke on the occasion. 

Habibun Nahar said, “Bangladesh has been struggling with air pollution for long, and the irony is we  are destroying our own environment.” 

Government has taken various steps to reduce carbon emission to protect the environment, she added. 

She laid emphasis on creating mass awareness for beating air pollution as this cannot be the task for the government alone. It is the responsibility of every individual for his or her own survival.

Habibun Nahar along with other guests inaugurated a poster exhibition and visited different works by the IUB students. 

The poster presentation consisted of a visual display on different environmental related issues. A total of 500 students participated in the competition and 100 posters were exhibited.  

Faculty members, administration staffers and students of IUB were present at the event.
