University of Dhaka (DU) is the only university that gets the entry into the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2018 published on Tuesday.
DU, however, ranked 1001-plus among 1,102 varsities ranked globally. After 200 top ranks THE puts the universities in groups like 401-500.
As THE ranking for 2018 lists the top 1,000 universities, DU virtually excluded from the main ranking and grouped with some other universities which are considered very low in global academic standards.
Among 197 universities in BRICS and emerging economies, DU ranked 189 while among the Asian universities, DU included in the group of 191-200.
Globally, the University of Oxford retains first place in the rankings, followed by Cambridge, which overtook California Institute of Technology and Stanford University, who came in at a joint third. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) completes the top five chart.
Overall, 1,000 universities from 77 countries were ranked by the THE. Though the US continues to be the top country in terms of number of universities in the top 200, China this year continued to rise with two of its institutions finding places in the top 30 for the first time.
