Dhaka University (DU) wears a festive look as a 16-day grand programme begins on the campus today, marking its 100th founding anniversary and the golden jubilee of the country's independence.
Curzon Hall, Arts Faculty, Business Faculty, VC Bhaban and other buildings and roads on the campus had been illuminated with colourful lights for celebrating its centenary. Some lights were also hanging from tree branches on the campus.
President Md. Abdul Hamid, also chancellor of the university, will inaugurate the programme as the chief guest while DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman will preside over it.
The inaugural programme will be held at the university's central playground.
Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering will address the programme virtually. Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury will attend the programme as a guest of honour.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah and DU Alumni Association President AK Azad will address the programme as the special guests.
The sixteen-day programme will start on December 1 and end on December 16 with a concert to be held at the central playground of the university.
After the inaugural programme, a discussion meeting will be held at 4:00 pm. Emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury and Prof Dr Sonali Chakravarty Banerjee, VC of Calcutta University, will be present as guests of honour.
On the second day, a discussion will be held at 4:00 pm with former DU VC and Professor Emeritus Dr AK Azad in the chair.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and Telecommunication and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar will be present among others.
Another discussion will be held at 4:00pm on December 3 with Honorary Professor at DU Development Studies Department Dr Atiur Rahman in the chair. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque and State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain will be present among others.
On December 4, a discussion will be held with former DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Shahadat Ali in the chair. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun will be present among others.
On December 12, a victory rally will be brought out from Aparajeya Bangla at 11:00 am. The DU VC will lead the rally.
