Record number of workers went abroad in 2017 

A record number of 1.01 million workers went abroad in 2017, which is roughly 0.25 million more than that of the previous year.

Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam informed it to the parliament on Monday.

"The number of manpower export increased at 10, 08,525 in 2017 from 7, 57,731 in 2016," he said.

Islam said it in reply to a starred question from independent MP Rahim Ullah (Feni-3).

State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque (Chunnu) answered the question in the House on behalf of the minister.

Nurul Islam also said Bangladesh is now exporting workers to 165 countries across the world, says UNB.

The government has recently re-fixed the highest costs of migration to 16 countries, he added.

The migration costs are as follows:

  • Singapore - Tk 262,270
  • Saudi Arab - Tk 165,000 (for only male, for females Tk 0.00)
  • Malaysia - Tk 160,000
  • Libya - Tk 145,780
  • Bahrain - Tk 97,780
  • United Arab Emirates - (UAE) Tk 107,780
  • Kuwait - Tk 106,780
  • Oman and Qatar - Tk 100,780
  • Iraq - Tk 129,540
  • Jordan - Tk 102,780
  • Egypt and Brunei - Tk 120,780
  • Russia - Tk 166,640
  • Maldives - Tk 115,780
  • Lebanon - Tk 117,780
