The Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), scheduled to take place in Qatar’s capital Doha from 23 to 27 January 2022, is likely to be deferred due to the Omicron threat, foreign ministry officials have said.
A number of international conferences are going to be rescheduled, foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen said on Tuesday.
“The Doha LDC conference may be deferred to March or April” he added.
Heads of state and government of LDC countries or representatives of the highest level are expected to attend the conference.
The expected outcome of LDC5, a new 10-year programme of action for the LDCs, will be adopted at a critical time, falling within the last 10 years of implementation of the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals across the LDCs. The Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) is the UN’s focal point for LDC5 conference preparations.
High Representative Courtenay Rattray will be the secretary-general of the conference.
