BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called an urgent meeting of the National Standing Committee as the verdict in a graft case against her is expected next month.

On Thursday, a Dhaka special judge’s court concluded the trial involving embezzlement of Tk 21 million in foreign donation meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust and kept its verdict pending for Feb 8.

The meeting of the party’s policymaking forum is scheduled for 8:30pm on Saturday at Khaleda’s Gulshan offices, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said.

With barely a year left before the general elections, several standing committee members said they are viewing the meeting as a significant one.

The meeting may decide on next course of actions by the party, bdnews24 said citing a senior BNP leader said.

A three-time prime minister, Khaleda faces up to life in prison if found guilty of the charges, which means she will be disqualified for running in the parliamentary polls.
